9th Annual Benefit Trail Ride and Poker Run

Athens County Children Services will host its annual Benefit Trail Ride and Poker Run on Sunday, November 1, 2009 at Begley’s ATV Campground located in New Straitsville. Now in its ninth year, the Trail Ride is open to ATV and dirt bike riders of all ages. The event participants will ride Wayne National Forest Trails while selecting playing cards for their poker hands at various checkpoints.

Riders can sign up from 8 am to 11 am, and the cost of entry is a $20.00 donation, which includes lunch. The Trail Ride and Poker Run are slated to begin at 11:00 am. Wayne National Forest Permits are required, and one-day permits will be available for sale at the campground as well as at Wayne National Forest Head Quarters.

Participants will have the opportunity to ride a designated 15 mile novice trail or a 35 mile main trail through Wayne National Forest.

 Kroger will provide a cookout-style awards lunch to take place at 3:00 pm. Awards will be presented in several categories including overall best hand, men’s, women’s, over fifty years old, youth, Halloween costumes class, and largest group or club.

 All proceeds will benefit the 22^nd Annual Santa Tree Christmas Project, a program coordinated by Athens County Children Services. The Christmas Project enables the community to provide gifts to children in need throughout Athens County. Over 1100 children received gifts through the project in 2008. In addition to the Santa Tree Christmas Project, funds raised at this year’s Trail Ride will go to help other local organizations which share in the common goal to assist the children and families of Athens County.

 Trail Ride coordinator CJ Verity stresses the importance of this event, saying “the Trail Ride is a great way to give your support to the local groups who are trying to assist the people who need help now more than ever.”

 Verity added that besides being a fundraiser for deserving local organizations, the Benefit Trail Ride and Poker Run is also a lot of fun and he encourages everyone to come out and enjoy the day.
